Why a Tape Measure Struggles Where a Scanner Doesn't
A tape measure needs two people, a straight line, and a wall that stays still while you're measuring it. Most old buildings offer none of the three.
Try measuring a room on your own and the tape sags, slips, or you lose count of which mark was which. Now try it in a loft, crouched under a sloping roof with a torch in your teeth. The numbers you end up with are usually close enough — until "close enough" turns into a gap between two walls that don't quite line up on the finished drawing.
A laser scanner solves this by not measuring at all, not in the traditional sense. It stands in the middle of a room and takes hundreds of thousands of tiny distance readings in every direction, building up a picture of the space as it actually is — sloped ceiling, wonky wall and all. Nobody has to hold anything steady, and nothing gets missed because the whole room gets captured at once.
The result is a set of drawings that match the real building, not a slightly optimistic version of it.
