What "Millimetre-Accurate" Actually Means

It sounds like a marketing phrase, so it's fair to be a little sceptical.

Here's what's actually going on. A scanner produces millions of individual points, each one a precise distance from where it's standing. On its own, that's just a very detailed photograph made of dots. The important part happens afterwards: those dots get lined up and checked against each other, so a measurement taken from one side of a room matches one taken from the other side, even though they came from different scan positions.

That checking process is what "accurate" actually means here. It's not that a laser is inherently more honest than a tape measure — it's that the numbers get cross-checked against themselves before anyone draws a single line.

There's also a standard behind all this, which is easy to forget matters. RICS — the professional body that regulates surveying in the UK — sets out exactly how a measured survey should be carried out and reported, down to how floor areas get calculated and what "accurate" is allowed to mean on a drawing. A survey carried out under RICS oversight isn't just careful. It's accountable to a set of rules that exist precisely so a number on a plan means what it claims to mean.

The plans that come out the other end aren't just detailed. They're consistent, and they're backed by something more solid than one surveyor's good intentions.
